Embracing Sanctity Through Ordinary Duties: A Journey of Faith

In the whirlwind of daily life, the path to sanctity might seem daunting, shrouded in complexities and extraordinary expectations. Yet, as I delve into the teachings of Jean-Pierre de Caussade, a profound simplicity emerges: sanctity is rooted in our faithful execution of daily duties and our acceptance of God’s will.

De Caussade asserts that sanctity isn't about achieving grandiose feats or extraordinary acts. Instead, it's about the consistent practice of fidelity to the duties assigned by God, whether they are active or passive. This idea has been a cornerstone in my own journey of faith, particularly during challenging times when life felt overwhelmingly complex.

For instance, as a homeschooling mom with limited resources, balancing my responsibilities while nurturing my faith has been an exercise in daily fidelity. The act of teaching my children, handling household chores, and managing financial constraints might seem mundane, yet it’s precisely in these ordinary moments that I’ve discovered a deeper connection to God. Each task, when done with love and devotion, becomes a pathway to holiness.

In moments of exhaustion or doubt, I’ve learned that the practice of sanctity lies not in the extraordinary but in embracing the simplicity of daily life with grace. This approach has helped me find peace in the routine and joy in the humble, recognizing that God’s grace pervades every action.

The passive aspect of sanctity, accepting whatever God sends us with a loving heart, also resonates deeply. When faced with unforeseen difficulties or setbacks, I've found solace in surrendering to God’s will, trusting that He is guiding me through each challenge.

In essence, sanctity is accessible to all, regardless of one’s state of life. By faithfully fulfilling our everyday duties and accepting God’s plan with humility, we align ourselves with divine grace. The treasure of sanctity isn’t hidden in grand gestures but is found in the simplicity of our daily lives, ready to be embraced by those who seek it.

Everything Is Supernaturalized by the Divine Action

The Power of Surrendering to God’s Will in Everyday Life In Abandonment to Divine Providence , Jean-Pierre de Caussade beautifully emphasizes how every aspect of our life can be supernaturalized by the divine action. He reminds us that God’s grace is present in all things, and that our spiritual journey is not about seeking extraordinary experiences or methods but embracing the simplicity of surrendering to God’s will. This concept resonated deeply with me, particularly as a homeschooling mother, constantly balancing family duties and personal devotion. There was a time when I was anxiously trying to figure out how to deepen my spiritual life while managing my daily tasks. I thought that holiness required grand gestures or extraordinary moments of divine intervention. But then I realized, as de Caussade puts it, that holiness is found in the simple things – even in folding laundry or preparing meals for my children. The Quiet Call of the Divine Will We often fail to recognize that God ...

Submission: A Free Gift to God

In our journey of faith, the concept of abandonment—a complete surrender to God’s will—can be daunting yet profoundly liberating. Jean-Pierre de Caussade's insights into the nature of this surrender invite us to understand that submission to God is not just an obligation; it's a free gift we offer in love, a beautiful act of trust. The Essence of Abandonment When we surrender our lives to God, we engage in a transformative process where our very being aligns with His divine will. It’s a dynamic relationship, one where our hearts open to His good pleasure, extending to every aspect of our lives. As de Caussade puts it, abandonment practiced interiorly embodies every possible variety of operation. What does this look like in real life? Personally, I recall a time when my family faced significant challenges. The uncertainty of our circumstances weighed heavily on my heart, often leaving me feeling anxious and powerless. It was during this period that I realized I had to let go o...

The Happiness and Peace of Abandonment to God

There is a deep and unshakable peace that comes from abandoning oneself entirely to God. In a world filled with uncertainty, struggles, and suffering, many of us seek security and control, only to find ourselves restless and anxious. But what if the greatest peace is found not in grasping for control, but in surrendering everything to the One who holds all things in His hands? In his letter to Sister Elizabeth Bourcier de Monthureux, Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade beautifully expresses the power of complete abandonment to God’s will. He reminds us that true perfection and lasting peace come from aligning our will with God’s, trusting that He is leading us even through the storms of life. The more we let go of our own desires, fears, and anxieties, the more we are able to rest in the profound joy and security of knowing that God is our sole support, help, and hope. The Transforming Power of Abandonment It is easy to fear the idea of giving up control. We often believe that if we do not cli...
